Job Summary:
Make a difference in your community - be a 911 Dispatcher! Answer 911 calls and dispatch Police, Fire, and Medical units.
The Bellevue Police / Eastside Regional Communications Center operates 24 hours a day, seven days per week. The position is responsible for receiving and dispatching emergency and non-emergency calls for police, fire and emergency medical services in a large geographic region in North King and South Snohomish counties. The position requires simultaneous use of a computer-aided dispatch system, computerized phone system and computer operated 800 Mhz radio system. Persons occupying this position may also be responsible for monitoring multiple radio channels and answering 911 telephone calls for service simultaneously. Employees work in a fast paced, high security environment.
- Answer
emergency and non emergency calls for service.Dispatch and
monitor radio traffic and location information of up to 60
personnel simultaneously.
- Prioritize
calls for 2 police departments, 14 fire departments and King
County Medics.
- Provide
assistance as requested to other police and fire agencies.
- Must
be available to work all shifts, including but not limited
to day/swing/night, weekends, holidays and mandatory overtime
as needed.
- Operate
a state-of-the-art computer aided dispatch system and computerized
electronics communication equipment.
- Approximately
10% of work is spent on routine clerical functions, and answering
non-emergency business lines in support of the dispatching
function.
Education:
High School
Diploma or GED required. Consideration may be given for education
and training related to 911 dispatch, law enforcement, fire
or emergency medical service, in lieu of experience.
Requirements:
- One year
multi-line telephone experience.
- One year customer service experience or experience working with the public.
- One year
data entry or on the job computer experience.
- Knowledgeable
in use of Microsoft Windows or Windows NT.
- Previous
work experience as a dispatcher is preferred, but not required.
- Previous
Police/Fire/EMS experience is preferred, but not required.
- Ability
to accurately hear and simultaneously electronically document
verbal information.
- Ability
to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in
writing.
- Ability
to remain calm and professional while questioning callers
who may be verbally abusive, emotionally upset, uncooperative
or frightened.
- Ability
to work in a high pressured and structured environment.
- Ability
to take direction, work independently and as part of a group.
- Must
be able to sit for an extended period of time and wear a telephone
headset.

The expected
duration of the selection process from the time of application
to the final stages of hiring may last anywhere from 6 weeks

- Qualified
candidates will be invited to participate in a testing process
to establish a list for interviews with our agency.
- Testing
will include a validated computerized keyboarding and skills
test to measure a candidates aptitude for the position.
- Applicants
who pass the testing will be invited to interview.
- Due to
the critical and high-security nature of dispatch work, top
candidates must pass a polygraph and psychological and medical
examination and a thorough criminal and background check.
Applicants
must meet the following requirements:
- No felony
convictions.
- No illegal
use or possession of marijuana within three years of the last
date to file application.
- No illegal
use or possession of any other drug within three years of
the last date to file application.
- No illegal
sale of any drug, including marijuana.
